If you drive into Chicago from the West via Congress Drive, you’ll pass this sculpture by Dessa Kirk in the median at the intersection of Michigan Avenue.

I decidedly took the low-angle approach to get the background distractions out of the frame and to blow out the sky. I think the white sky enhances the texture and shading of the sculpture. The play of light and shadow on the torso, the face/chin, and the pedals combined with the texture makes for an interesting study.

What’s not seen in this photograph is the base of this sculpture which is made up of rebar fashioned into a wide base funnel for support. There are vines planted around the base which are growing up and around that rebar and are trimmed once they approach the base of the torso. During the summer the vines and flowers make a dress of a sorts.

All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
